The upcoming 2.7 release of WordPress looks to dramatically improve upon the editing interface. I am anxiously awaiting that. I too have been turning more often to the built-in interface, but also use ScribeFire as an efficient method for posting content.

Using 2.7 now and there is not much improvement to the editing interface. Some new tools for dealing with image resizing (which is nice) but still a very limited set of formatting tools. You can get plugins that expand that but that's more headache than it's worth, not to mention those plugins tend to be buggy.

    Automattic, are you reading this?
